Mexican Food; It's What's For Dinner

I’ve calmed down about Michigan State football and now it’s time to eat. If it wasn’t for food, I probably wouldn’t be alive.

So I’m eating Mexican food again. I love it. I love it so much I’m gonna rank my Top Five Mexican restaurants. Again, this is interactive (like my Top Five Drinking Experiences) so feel free to tell me your Top Five Mexican Restaurants. Here we go.

5. Taco Bell, Anywhere, USA
“What? Taco Bell? Come on! “ you might be thinking. Well back off! It’s cheap. It’s almost always available and sometimes it’s so good you forget your actually eating bad food. It’s so good I ate it three days in a row for lunch on my Pediatrics Rotation. I would get a number eight, soft shell with a Mountain Dew and go to Young Patriot’s Park in Riverview, Mi. I ate my delicious Taco Bell while I sat outside next to a peaceful pond inhabited by hundreds of ducks and geese, with a large peaceful nuclear warhead monument next to it on repeat sixty degree November days.

4. Amigos, Taylor, Mi
Ah. Taylortucky. This is kind of like a blue-collar El Azteco. Great enchilada plate and the salsa, the hot stuff, rival El Az. It’s not better than El Az, but could be mentioned in the same sentence (see last sentence). It’s only five minutes from my apartment and I frequent it often. Also, you can get a carryout order in less than five minutes. Tommy likey.

3. San Miguel’s, Hilton Head Island, SC
If Amigos is the blue-collar El Az, then this quaint place located in Shelter Cove is the white-collar El Az. There is outdoor seating right next to a dock full of very large boats. The food is outstanding, the beer is cheap (Corona’s are $2.50) and again the salsa is very good (but not as good as Amigos). San Miguel’s gets the third spot mostly because of its ambience, but it also has a fine food.

2. Panchero’s, East Lansing, Mi
This is the Panchero’s in downtown E.L. The one in Okemos is no good. Stupid gringos. The one in Eastwood Town Centre is not very welcoming. The one in downtown is just right. It’s so just right, it can be used for any meal, i.e. lunch, dinner or the late-night drunken feast (when it is at its best!). The service there is friendly and prompt and the cost can’t be beat (except by Taco Bell, but this is real food). Pinto or Black main?

1. El Azteco, East Lansing, Mi
The one and only El Az! If this restaurant where a woman I would marry her. I was introduced to this fine establishment by my brother Jeff after we watched the Spartan football team’s spring practice and former Spartan coach George Perles gave me a watch (he also gave his players money, which is badness according to the NCAA). I say a little thank to Jeff every time I eat there. The salsa is the best in the history of mankind. The enchilada plate is phenomenal…once I ate two of them in one sitting. The Topopo Salad that Chris eats is large enough to feed two Chrises. Jon eats the burrito plate, which is fantastic. Although, the last pitcher of margaritas I had tasted like vomit (literally) usually they are superb. So what if the service is awful. The food is great and sometimes you have such a buzz from the margs it doesn’t matter. I love El Az! Hooray for El Az!

i'll remember that if el az ever turns into a woman.

i can second that the margs tasted like vomit...maybe it's because i vomited up tequila once (or twice) because of chi-bro and her damn shots!

i wish you were here to get the enchilada plate with green sauce to eat for me...can you get a single enchilada? that sounds good.

What about La Fiesta? I can't believe you sold out M-Town for Taco Bell USA.

LaFiesta is terrible. Chris and Katherine and I went to a sweet place in NYC. I can't remember what the name was.

Also, in LA there is a place called Paco's I went to a couple of weeks ago, it is pretty good. Not top 5 worthy, but probably between 7 and 10.

Somewhere creeping along in the top 5 would be a place called the Blue Goose Cantina, in good old Dallas. They have the most phenominal margaritas in the world. They also have a salsa that rivals El Az. It is pretty kick ass. A bit pricey, but what isn't these days?

Ummm... I don't like El Azteco. Also, until a few years ago I thought it was LS Taco.

There's a Mexican place in Mt Pleasant called Los Palaminos but its name tranlsated means Horses, and I don't like the sound of that.

La Seniorita's in Mt Pleasant is really good.

Peace, or should I say, El peace-O?

let's see....

thanks jacob for the comments. i certainly would like to try that place. perhpas you and i could visit it sometime soon. maybe like a date? pick you up at quarter to 8.00. no 7.45. okay, quarter to 8.00.

emily - la fiesta is out. i'm not selling out m-town. there is a taco bell in m-town. and i believe you visited it w/ dj the other night...so lay off me i'm starving.

jon - you're much more knowledgable in this subject than me. i've been to some mexican places in southern cali, but i was disappointed. the place in the big d sounds enticing. shall we go there when i'm not broke and i finally visit you. say, spring break....if you have the time. you and chris and katherine all talked about the nyc place. i'd like to go there as well. this would most likely dismantle my top 5. but that's okay.

dj - emily sticks up for me. i never said LS Taco. although i'm very nasally, i never said that. why don't you like el az? obviously, you need some more experience there. that will come. you will slowly turn to the dark side. el az will say, "obi won never told you what happened to your father." you'll reply, "he told me you killed him." el az will say, "no. i am your father." you'll scream, "no you're not! that's impossible." then i'll ask what happened to your hand.

dave - my oh my, rock n roll will never die. but, this concerns me. grossness is such a harsh word. but, you do have the experience to make such a call and i appreciate your frankness. it hurts me though, b/c when i marry el az, will you still come? i hope so.

thank you for your comments and your suggestions. and eat some mexican food to support nafta. does that support nafta?

Buying Mexican food is showing support NAFTA, but you should really buy an El Camino if you want to help support Bill Clinton's dumbest legacy.
