Monroe Cross Country is Back

The first Saturday in November is usually a special day for boys and girls cross country teams in the state of Michigan. It is the day of the state meet, in which the top three teams from nine regions come to Michigan International Speedway (MIS) and run for a championship.

This year the Monroe boy’s team, led by Cole Sanseverino and Justin Heck, enters the state meet ranked sixth in the state after finishing second in the Willow Metropark Regional (arguably the toughest region in the state).

Monroe Cross Country, once the most dominant high school athletic program in the state of Michigan, fell on hard times in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. However, Monroe Cross Country Alumnus and current coach Mark Scoles has led the program back to its winning ways.

With outstanding talents like Sanseverino and Heck, Monroe’s team also has great depth with Jared Werner, Nathan Perez, and Kane Johnson.

A cliché in cross country is you are only as good as your fifth man. In Monroe’s case, they are very good. In cross country a team needs to have a pack of runners that finish close to each other as opposed to having a great runner and then two or three average runners. This bodes well for Monroe at the state meet today. If Sanseverino and Heck can repeat their regional performances and Perez, Johnson and Werner finish close to each other look out; Monroe could finish in the top three.

It’s great to see Monroe’s boy’s cross country team back on top where they belong. And if Coach Scoles can keep drawing talented runners who are willing to do their summer homework, i.e., run 500 miles, Monroe will stay on top for a long time.

The Division One race is at 2.00 this afternoon at MIS.
